General News - Personal computer use can download trouble at work
Fess up. You've used the computer at work for personal business. You've booked your vacation online while sitting at your desk, you ordered some new books to be delivered to your home and you even downloaded some music and videos.

Don't be surprised, then, when your employer gets dragged into court because of your online antics. Not the vacation business, or even the ordering of books. Nope. It was when you downloaded the music and videos -- and didn't pay for the right -- that you landed your company, and yourself, in hot water.

Outsourcing : Indian scene - Emerging BPO opportunities
NEW DELHI JULY 16. Total employment in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry is expected to reach six lakhs by 2007, according to a research done by International Data Corporation (IDC) in association with the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

The study titled `Emerging BPO Opportunities for India' reveals that employment in this area will grow at a compounded annual growth rate 32 per cent during 2003-07 from the present 1.5 lakhs. Expanding integration between corporate IT decision-makers and business processes along with the significant cost advantage have led to a growing acceptance of BPO as a means of managing business. In 2002, the BPO industry witnessed an increase in the number of contracts being awarded and a flurry of activity in setting up foot by different global players.

LONDON: Minimalist Internet search engine Google was voted "brand of the year" by branding junkies on Tuesday, proving once again that less is more as it pipped giants such as Coca-Cola and Starbucks to the top slot.

Google, the powerful search tool that presents Net surfers with a minimum of visual clutter, came top in a global poll of 1,315 respondents to a survey by Interbrand, the leading British branding agency.

The respondents, who were described as "above averagely intelligent" professionals and students from over 72 countries, were asked which brand had made the most impact on their lives in 2002, either positively or negatively.

E-Business - Web shoppers' new option: Bill me later
The "bill me later" feature works much like a credit card, said Mark Lavelle, vice president of business development for I4 Commerce. After entering their billing address during the checkout process, shoppers click on the "bill me later" button. Instead of asking for a credit card number, the service asks consumers to enter their date of birth and occasionally the last four digits of their Social Security number.

I4 pays the merchant, then within 10 to 15 days after the buyers complete their initial transaction, I4 will send them a bill for all of their "bill me later" transactions during that time period, Lavelle said. They can either pay the full bill at once or pay a portion of it. I4 charges 17.9 percent interest on any outstanding balances, he said. Much like a credit card company, I4 will bill customers on a monthly basis.

E-Commerce - What Works???
Two years after the dot-com bust, some key technologies have proven to be the silver lining that has helped companies survive the unforgiving e-commerce climate.

Truly useful e-commerce tools address one of three areas: displaying, buying or sending the product. As a result, iPix's 360-degree images, Amazon.com's "one-click" option and Federal Express' online order tracking are examples of popular technologies shoppers use online.

"We're into that phase where common sense makes decisions, not just new cool tech and bells and whistles," said Kate Delhagen, analyst at Forrester Research. "People will say: Do customers want to see the item better, or are they halfway through the purchase process and need help, or does it take too long to make a purchase?"
